Porcelain Crowns
A dental crown refers to a cap that is used to cover an already damaged tooth in order to salvage whatever is left of the tooth structure and guard against tooth fracture. Dental crowns are used to protect teeth that have incurred a lot of damage to their tooth structure, which can be as a result of dental caries or having a poor large filling. In a few instances, dental crowns can be used to protect teeth that have worn out from use making them vulnerable.
While crowns can be made from various materials, porcelain crowns are particularly popular, since they often resemble your natural teeth. Porcelain is also highly durable and can last for many years, unlike most dental restorations that eventually need to be replaced.
What Does Getting Porcelain Crown Involve
Getting crowns requires two dental appointments. In the first appointment, the dentist will take a few molds of your teeth to create a custom crown. The mold will also be used to create a more temporary crown that you will use on your teeth for about two weeks, until your new crowns are created by the dental lab technicians. For placement of the temporary crown, the dentist will numb your gums to remove any decay on the teeth and shape it so that the crown can fit appropriately. The temporary crown will then be fixed to your tooth using temporary cement. Your bite is then assessed to ensure it is not affected.
On your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the teeth cleaned before the new more permanent crown is placed. You will be advised on regular dental visits to have your teeth checked.
Porcelain Veneers
Veneers are thin pieces of highly durable tooth shaped dental restorations that are often custom made to fit the right shape and colour of your teeth by a certified dental lab technician. Veneers are bonded onto the front of your teeth giving you an attractive smile. Porcelain veneers can be used to correct teeth that are: crooked, misshaped, discoloured, too small or too large, and chipped to cosmetically create an even bright smile.
Getting Porcelain Veneers
Getting your veneers in requires two separate appointments. In the first appointment, the teeth are lightly buffed and shaped so they can fit into the veneer. A mold of your teeth is taken and the shade of right colour for your teeth picked.
During the second visit, special liquids are used to clean your teeth and then bonding cement is applied between your teeth and the veneer. A light beam used to harden this bond.
