Answering the Questions About Holistic Dentistry

posted in: General Dentistry | 0

Holistic dentistry, also referred to as biological dentistry, is an approach that considers a person’s entire state of physical and emotional health. The main difference between holistic dentistry and a traditional dentist is their approach. Holistic dentists believe that your oral health has a link to your overall health. Due to this, holistic dentists will not opt to use materials that cause issues (such as amalgam) and, instead, use natural therapies. These are often combined with conventional therapies to prevent, diagnose, and treat problems with your oral health.

What will happen during my first dental procedure?

Like any other clinics, you will have to schedule an appointment and be seen at your scheduled appointment time. The first visit is usually diagnostic in nature, allowing your holistic dentist to develop a treatment plan for you that addresses your needs. It is also encouraged that you bring a copy of your medical records and discuss details about your health issues and significant life events. Rest assured, this information will be kept private between you and your dentist.

Why don’t holistic dentists use amalgam fillings?

Amalgam, a material commonly used in dental fillings, contain mercury. Mercury is a known neurotoxin and has been reported to have harmful effects on the body. When mercury is present in dental fillings, the microscopic vapors that are being released from the fillings find their way into the bloodstream.

How is holistic dentistry a different approach?

Holistic dentists take the whole body into account instead of just focusing on your teeth and gums. These dentists may advise and offer programs on preventative care that encompasses more than just good oral hygiene. Holistic dentistry emphasizes better nutrition, smoking cessation, and moderate alcohol consumption for patients who drink alcoholic beverages. Aside from that, holistic dentists are mostly against root canal treatments. They believe that chemicals in sterilizing agents, and the trapped bacteria in the root canal (as a result of the procedure) causes long-term health effects. Moreover, holistic dentists will not use amalgam, nickel, or other metals to fill cavities and use composite resin instead. Lastly, digital X-ray equipment is used to expose patients to less radiation.
